Boots Mobile Phone Recycling
What they say: “Customers simply choose their handset, send it in to us and Boots will issue them with their Advantage Card points via one of the Extra Offers Kiosks in a larger Boots store. This provides a great way for Advantage Cardholders to increase their spending power in store and be environmentally friendly at the same time – something which has proven very popular to date. And for every single handset received £1 will be given to charity (these donations are split equally between Boots chosen charities Breast Cancer Care and The Eve Appeal).”

Boots launched their own Boots Mobile Phone Recycling website in 2008 in partnership with mobile phone recycling leaders Redeem plc, a market leader in mobile handset recycling with over ten years experience. They offer people the chance to get 5000 Advantage card points for every mobile phone sent in that can be spent in any Boots store nationwide. They have announced that they have given out just under 50 million Advantage Card Points to their customers through their successful Boots Mobile Recycling initiative.
Around 120 million Advantage Points have been awarded to Boots customers and the Boots Advantage Card was launched over 11 years ago and has just under 17 Million card holders in the UK. The Boots mobile phone recycling initiative has been very well liked by Boots customers and has raised over £60,000 pounds for charities including Breast Cancer Care and The Eve Appeal. They give out £1 with an additional 28% being generated by Gift Aid for every old mobile phone handed in as well as give people the Advantage Card Points.
- 5000 Advantage Card Points for any mobile phone.
- 100 Advantage Card Points for old inkjet cartridges.
- 50 Advantage Card Points for mobiles not listed.
So the process is simple. If you already have a Boots Advantage Card you can register on site. (Note you will need to create a seperate account from boots.com if you have one) Once you are registered just enter your make and model of mobile phone in and it will tell you how many Advantage Card Points you can get for that make and model.
Here is a quick list of some of the mobile phones and the points offered for each. You can easily search on site for your specific make and model but this just shows that they offer more than the 5,000 Advantage Card Points if you have a more expensive mobile phone to recycle.
- Apple iPhone 3G 8Gb – 12,500 Advantage Card points
- Apple IPhone 3GS 16GB – 20,000 Advantage Card points
- BlackBerry 9530 Storm – 8,666 Advantage Card points
- BlackBerry Curve 8900 – 6,666 Advantage Card points
- Nokia N95 8Gb – 10,000 Advantage Card points
- Nokia N97 – 20,000 Advantage Card points
- Motorola RAZR2 V8 – 2,500 Advantage Card points
- Sony Ericsson K850i – 3,354 Advantage Card points
- Sony Ericsson W580i – 1,666 Advantage Card points
When you think of how many points you are getting and compare that to the cash value of what you can spend them on in store it works out quite generous considering taking a cash offer with another mobile phone recycler. Especially for the moderate to heavy Boots shoppers.
After you have read the above you should have noted the 2 important points. That you will need to have a Boots Advantage Card (Free). And you will need an old mobile phone or inkjet cartridge. Once and if you have those already to use the site itself when selling a mobile phone is very easy. The site itself has a How it Works page. But you should know what to do. You can search for your make and model of mobile phone and select it adding it to a basket. If you are happy with the Advantage Card Points offered for your mobile just checkout.
You can request to have a free post envelope sent out to you to send the phone in or you can print off a freepost address lable. Your points will be available within 30 days on your Advantage Card. To collect your points just put your Advantage Card into an Extra Offers Kiosk in one of the larger Boots stores. You can find your nearest Extra Offers Kiosk using a Store Locator on the main Boots website.
What happens to your mobile with Boots?
If your mobile phone is in good working order it will be refurbished and sold on to be reused in developing countries. Mobile phones that can’t be repaired are sent to be recycled. The precious metals inside that can be reused are extracted from the handset and any remaining materials smelted and reused. Inkjet cartridges are refilled for reuse and returned to the consumer stream as a more environmentally friendly option.
